How to blur a Reddit screenshot

Usernames, DMs, and personal details in posts. Cover handles before you cross-post the thread.

Cross-posting a Reddit screenshot to Twitter, a Discord, or a news tip line? Usernames, DM headers, and personal details inside the post body travel with the snip — even when you only meant to share the joke. Cover those identities in Markup, Paint, Preview, or a browser tab — then send that copy, not a nested Markup photo from Recents.

How to blur a Reddit screenshot (step by step)

Crop the left community rail and the top account menu first. Username chips in comments stack fast; bar them before you chase the punchline crop.

On your phone or computer

iPhone: Photos → Markup. Filled rectangle over usernames, DM headers, and any phone number in modmail.

Android: Gallery editor — mosaic or a solid shape. Prefer opaque covers on digits and invite links.

Desktop: Paint or Preview Markup for the comment stack and sidebar mod lists. Soft blur on a short handle often still reads.

Or finish in a browser (optional)

Want to do it in a tab with no install? BlurThis is one free option. The file stays on your device. Other browser tools work too if they paint on the page and do not upload the image.

  1. Open the editor in your browser. No account needed for BlurThis.
  2. Drop the screenshot, tap Upload from PC or Mobile, or paste with Ctrl / ⌘ + V on a computer.
  3. Pick Box or Draw. Use Black bar for phone numbers, emails, and OTPs. Use Blur for faces when a soft cover is enough.
  4. Drag over each private spot. Pinch or use + / − to zoom. Leave a little padding so no letter peeks out.
  5. Tap Download PNG. Send that file. Keep the original out of the chat or ticket.

What to cover on Reddit chrome

  • Post author and comment usernames — including deleted tags that still show a handle in old snips.
  • Chat and DM headers, invite links, and phone numbers shared in modmail.
  • Profile flair, avatar, and “cake day” rows when they identify a small community member.
  • Personal info in the post body: addresses, school names, workplaces, and screenshots-inside-screenshots.
  • Subreddit sidebar widgets that list moderators by name.
  • Notification toasts that preview another username mid-capture.

Crop to the one comment when the comment is the proof. You skip a ladder of handles. If the thread needs context, keep two or three lines and bar every username plate that repeats between them.

Black bar for usernames that act like IDs

A username next to a real-name confession is an identity string. Soft blur on a short handle often leaves a recoverable shape. Use Black bar over usernames, and over any phone, email, or address digits in the body. Modmail ticket numbers and Discord invites pasted into chat get the same bar.

Journalists and tip-line readers should treat Reddit handles like sources when the post is sensitive — see how journalists cover a source. Phone numbers that ride along are a SIM-swap ingredient; cover them like any other digit string in hide phone number and email.

DMs, modmail, and crossposts

Chat screenshots leak both sides of the header. Cover every handle you do not have permission to show — including your own if the post is a public call-out. Modmail queues show a list of other reporters; crop to one thread.

Crossposting into Discord or Slack needs the same chrome pass as any chat paste. Discord tokens love the address bar — see redact a Discord screenshot.

FAQ: Are usernames “public” so I can leave them?

Public on Reddit is not the same as cleared for a new audience. A niche handle plus a photo of their street is doxxing. Cover by default when you amplify the post.

FAQ: What about my own username?

Optional on a personal blog. Required if the screenshot is meant to show “someone else said this” without making the thread about you.

FAQ: Old.reddit vs new UI?

Old.reddit packs more sidebar text; new UI packs profile hover cards. Same rule: anything that is not the quote is chrome.

FAQ: Can I crop avatars and keep the text?

Yes, when the remaining pixels still make the point. Watch for usernames inside the quote block and for link previews that unroll a real name.
